Grading at ITU
All exams at ITU are graded according to the 7-point grading scale or the pass/fail evaluation.
The final grade is based on the student's overall performance on all the intended learning outcomes.
The pass/fail evaluation can only be employed by prior agreement with the relevant head of programme.
7-point grading scale
By law, the 7-point grading scale must be used for graduated assessment at exams in Denmark.
ITU guarantees that a student who has passed the exam can carry out the actions described in the intended learning outcomes at the level of a least point 02. A grade lower than 02 means that the exam is failed.
Below you can see a description of the 7-point grading scale. It is an official translation by the Danish Ministry of Education. Unfortunately, the English translation is not as focused on goal fulfilment as the Danish text. In order to get an idea of what the Danish text is like, you could try replacing the term
"the relevant material"
used below with
"intended learning outcomes"

12 - For an excellent performance
The grade 12 is given for an excellent performance displaying a high level of command of all aspects of the relevant material, with no or only a few minor weaknesses.
10 - For a very good performance
The grade 10 is given for a very good performance displaying a high level of command of most aspects of the relevant material, with only minor weaknesses.
7 - For a good performance
The grade 7 is given for a good performance displaying good command of the relevant material but also some weaknesses.
4 - For a fair performance
The grade 4 is given for a fair performance displaying some command of the relevant material but also some major weaknesses.
02 - For an adequate performance
The grade 02 is given for a performance meeting only the minimum requirements for acceptance.
00 - For an inadequate performance
The grade 00 is given for a performance which does not meet the minimum requirements for acceptance.
-3 - For an unacceptable performance
The grade -3 is given for a performance which is unacceptable in all respects.

Karakteren -3 gives for den helt uacceptable præstation.
All grading must be absolute.
Absolute grading refers to grading based on fixed percentage scales (e.g. 100% excellent fulfillment of learning outcome = 12 points). By contrast, relative grading refers to grading based on score distributions within class.
Relative grading is not an option in Denmark.
Absolute grading means that, in principle, all students at a course can receive the same grade.
Grading at exams with both a written and an oral part
The D and E exam forms consist of two parts - a submission (of written work or other sorts of material) and an oral exam.
At ITU the assessment in such cases is based on an overall evaluation of the written hand-in and the oral exam, unless stated otherwise in the course base prior to enrollment. If you, for instance, wish to apply a certain percentage-wise weighting of the oral and the written part, this must appear from your course description.
In general, such a percentage-wise weighting cannot be recommended, unless very good reasons for this can be procured.
Please discuss the matter with the relevant head of programme, if you for some reason consider to break with the principle of an overall assessment of the two parts.
Individual grading at groups exams
The Grading Order stipulates that: "In connection with both an individual exam and a group exam, an individual assessment must be made of the students' performance, and separate grades must be awarded." (Part 2, section 4.1)
You must therefore plan and carry out group exams in such a way that a basis for a well-founded individual assessment can be established.
You must for instance define a group size limit in order to obtain such a basis, and you must consider and describe in detail how an oral exam will be structured in order to bring all examinees in play.

External examiners' weight in the grading
If the examiner and the external examiner cannot agree on a grade, the external examiner's vote carries the most weight.
Quote from the Grading Order, part 2, section11
Where both an internal examiner and an external examiner are involved in the assessment, the grade to be awarded
shall be agreed upon between them.
(2) If the internal examiner and the external examiner are not in agreement about the grade to be awarded, each
examiner shall award a separate grade. The grade awarded for the examination shall then be the average of these grades
rounded off to the nearest grade on the grading scale. If the average is half-way between two grades on the grading scale, the final grade shall be the nearest higher grade if the external examiner has awarded the highest grade, or otherwise the nearest lower grade.
(3) In case of disagreement as to whether the assessment of the performance awarded should be Pass or Fail, the external examiner's assessment shall be decisive.
Announcement of exam results
All exam results must be announced (= accessible for the student in My Study Activities) within 4 weeks from exam or submission day. In order to conform to this, exam results should in general be handed in at Student Affairs and Programmes within 3 weeks from exam or submission day. Excepted for this are oral exams, where the grade sheet must be handed in at Student Affairs and Programmes immediately after the last examinee.
In the calculation of the 4 weeks period, July does not count.
The 4 weeks rule stems from the Examination Order, section 26.
For examinations where the assessment is not announced to the student immediately afterwards
, the university sets a date for when the assessment will be announced to the student.
The date in subsection (1) must be
within four weeks
of the examination, cf., however, section 16, and must be announced to the student at the same time as the examination date, either through posting on university notice boards or by alternative means.
The month of July is not included
when calculating the four-week deadline.
Assessment of bachelor projects, master's (candidatus) theses and master's projects, must, however, be announced within two months of submission

At ITU the 4-weeks deadline also apply to the amount of time between submisison of exam paper and oral exam
, meaning that an oral exam must always be carried out no later than 4 weeks from submission day.
When asssessing master's theses and bachelor projects, examiners are urged to stick to the 4-weeks deadline too -
as students who are about to graduate shall not be detained for too long before we let them go.
Grading in unusual cases
In some cases it might be difficult to decide if a student should be graded U (for absence or lack of submission) or -3 (for failed). You might, for instance, wonder if a 'blank hand-in' with nothing but a frontpage shall be graded U or -3.
We therefore recommend that you read this
of such scenarios and that you always consult Student Affairs and Programmes if you have any doubts on the grading before you fill in and sign the grade sheet.
